Policy Prioritys

Our Mission

At Greater Houston Progressives, we are driven by the energy and vision of young people who are determined to build a better world. Leaders like Tim Walz, with his strong commitment to progressive values, and Kamala Harris, with her unwavering dedication to justice and equity, represent the leadership we need to bring about real, substantive change. Together, they envision an America where young people, particularly those from marginalized communities, are at the forefront of policy-making. We are rallying behind them to ensure that the policies we advocate for in Houston reflect these values on a national scale.

Medicare for All

We stand with Tim Walz and Kamala Harris in supporting healthcare as a human right, not a privilege. Young people across the nation are demanding a system where every American, regardless of income or status, has access to comprehensive healthcare without the burden of crippling debt. This is not just a dream—it’s a necessity for our generation.

  • Medical Debt: Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy in the U.S., affecting over 137 million people. We advocate for policies that eliminate this burden, particularly for young people who are disproportionately affected .

  • Prescription Drug Price Caps: Americans pay, on average, over 2.5 times more for prescription drugs than people in other developed countries. We support caps on drug prices to make life-saving medications affordable for all

  • Mental Health Services: Over 20% of adults in the U.S. experience mental illness, yet many go untreated due to high costs. We support expanding access to mental health services as part of a comprehensive healthcare plan

Green New Deal

In alignment with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s groundbreaking advocacy and Tim Walz’s commitment to climate action, we are pushing for a Green New Deal that addresses the climate crisis head-on. Young people have been at the forefront of the climate movement, recognizing the urgent need for massive investments in renewable energy, the creation of millions of green jobs, and prioritizing frontline communities—often the hardest hit by environmental degradation—in the transition to a sustainable economy.

  • Public Transit Expansion: Investing in sustainable public transportation systems can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 37%. We support expanding and modernizing public transit to make it more accessible and affordable .

  • Sustainable Agriculture: Agriculture is responsible for about 10% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. We advocate for policies that promote sustainable farming practices and support farmers in transitioning to environmentally friendly methods

Criminal Justice Reform

Tim Walz and Kamala Harris have been vocal advocates for reimagining our criminal justice system. Young people are leading the charge for policies that end mass incarceration, eliminate cash bail, and invest in restorative justice programs that focus on rehabilitation rather

  • Abolishing Cash Bail: Over 450,000 people are currently detained pretrial simply because they cannot afford bail. We advocate for the complete elimination of cash bail, which disproportionately impacts young people and communities of color

  • Air Conditioning in Harris County Jail: In Harris County, inmates suffer in extreme heat, with temperatures in the jail often exceeding 90 degrees. This inhumane condition disproportionately impacts vulnerable populations, including young people and those with pre-existing health conditions. We advocate for the immediate installation of air conditioning in all jail facilities to ensure the basic human rights and dignity of every individual in custody.

Economic Justice

Inspired by the policies championed by Harris and AOC, we advocate for a living wage for all workers, universal child care, and the dismantling of corporate power structures that exploit labor and concentrate wealth in the hands of a few. Young people today are demanding an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy elite.
